From the Editor's Desk A question that has bugged me for a while now is how Facebook will monetize Whatsapp, for which it paid a mammoth $20 billion. The Whatsapp founders have mentioned several times that there will be no ads on Whatsapp. The annual fee is gone and would never have worked as a serious revenue stream anyway. As this article mentions, they may soon start personalizing Facebook ads based on your Whatsapp conversations. One thing that has already started happening is friend suggestions on Facebook based on your Whatsapp contacts. This became obvious to me when my neighborhood kirana guy (who takes orders on Whatsapp) showed up as a friend suggestion on Facebook. The power of Whatsapp data and how that can be monetized on Facebook is probably what attracted Mark Zuckerberg in the first place - Comment
