Blog Sree Vijaykumar | From the Editor's Desk Given India's complexity, the solution to its demographic timebomb (a large young workforce without the means/skills to earn a livelihood) has to be multi-fold. We need both the NSDC (National Skill Development Corporation) skilling workers in the millions (through training partners), and industry taking the initiative to train potential employees. However, if one were to focus on one strategy to keep the large masses of unskilled/semi-skilled Indians gainfully employed, it should be to enable the small business entrepreneur. At 48 million, India has the second largest number of SMEs in the world. Lack of access to capital is the biggest problem for SMEs today. One proposed idea that could kill two birds with one stone is to provide lower rate loans to SMEs that produce more jobs. It would incentivize entrepreneurs to enter and expand in labour intensive sectors, which is probably what India needs at the moment.
