Blog Sree Vijaykumar | From the Editor's Desk One of the major misconceptions about the Aadhar number is its purpose. It simply establishes that you are who you say you are. It does so more accurately than any other system because it uses biometric technology, which is the hardest to cheat (your fingerprint and your retinal scan are unique). The primary purpose of Aadhar is to prevent pilferage with various government schemes targeting the poor. It does not establish that you are an Indian or that you reside at a particular address. There are other documents for that. Is the cost of implementing Aadhar worth the savings in pilferage from government schemes? Yes. Is privacy a concern? Yes, various third party agencies have been used to collect your data, but without your bank account information or other associated document, the Aadhar number by itself doesn't reveal much about you. It's the same as the Social Security Number in the US, which various agencies use in combination with other documents to determine everything from your driving record to your credit score. Also, mandating anything doesn't help. If someone wants to avail a government benefit, it's in their interest to get the Aadhar number. The government needs to do a better job of explaining Aadhar. - Comment | |
